Steve Beam, master distiller at Limestone Branch Distillery says:
When I began working on this limited edition, I knew I wanted to finish our bourbon in a cask and I was looking for one that would add complexity and a dimension that expands the flavor profile. Armagnac is a rustic, full-bodied spirit that contributes dark fruit notes, complementing the vanilla notes in the bourbon. Just like a chef adds spices to enhance flavors, I believe cask-finishing should be similar, where it simply enhances the natural flavors in the bourbon.
Approximately 5000 cases are being produced. The bourbon is bottled at 101 proof (50.5% alcohol) and carries an MSRP of $99.99 for a 750ml bottle. This release also features an enhanced bottle designed by David Cole which should make this more appealing for collectors.
The tasting notes are:
Nose: Soft leather aroma with hints of honeydew melon
Taste: Vanilla notes with hints of burnt orange and dried plum
Finish: Toasted coconut with lingering oak
My Take
This product is already listed on the State of Ohio Liquor website which means this release is scheduled to make it to Ohio. That's always good news! In terms of the release itself, I've never had Yellowstone or any bourbon or whiskey from Limestone Branch so I don't have any history to compare this to. With that being the case, I'm not sure this would be the release for me to start exploring. I think I would be better served starting with the Yellowstone Select for $34.99 and seeing if that holds up before venturing to their premium products.
If you're a Yellowstone or Limestone Branch Distillery fan, this is a great opportunity to get a unique 7-year that comes in a beautiful bottle that would look great on any shelf. However, for me personally, this is one I'll be sitting out.
