This batch is the final two barrels of their 10 year 100 proof straight bourbon. Master Blender Ryan Perry says:
"We are excited to offer whiskey enthusiasts the last remaining bottles of Heaven's Door 10 Year Tennessee Straight Bourbon. The reaction to our first release was so positive, we felt we had to bring it back one last time."The bourbon is mellowed with sugar maple after distillation, but before entering new white oak barrel. Each bottle comes in a commemorative box with a replica of Bob Dylan's hand-typed lyrics of "Maggie's Farm" and "Subterranean Homesick Blues" (he is a partner of Heaven's Door). The bottles are available via preorder at reservebar.com and for purchase at select stores once released.
Additionally, Heaven's Door has announced details on the first of what they are calling their 'Bootleg Series' of whiskeys (named after Dylan's "Bootleg Series" of albums). The first release will be a 25-year-old whiskey finished in Japanese Mizunara oak casks.
"Native to Japan, Mizunara Oak is one of the rarest and most expensive types of oak in the world. Waiting at least 200 years before being harvested for barrel aging, alongside a global boom of Japanese whiskey, Mizunara Oak has become extremely difficult to procure. As a result, Japan has created an annual auction of the oak with a small supply going to the highest bidders."The first of the Bootleg series of whiskey is scheduled for release near the 2019 holiday season and comes with a $499.99 MSRP.
Our Take
Both of these whiskey's sound pretty cool. I've never had a sugar maple twist in my bourbon and I'm curious how that would be... Would it turn out like Crown maple or would it be something more unique and less overpowering. However, without knowing the MSRP of the 10 year, it's hard to say if this is a bourbon I'd would be on the hunt for. The Mizunara is a neat concept and I'm sure the Mizunara oak brings out truly unique flavors. I'll be writing about that more when additional details are announced. Stay tuned.
