Chicken Cock Whiskey Releases Beer Barrel Select

Grain & Barrel Spirits owned Chicken Cock Whiskey, in a collaboration with Goodwood Brewing, has released 1800 bottles of a new spirit they are calling Beer Barrel Select Whiskey. This new spirit is a blend of 1.5-11.5 year old Kentucky Bourbons finished in Walnut Brown Ale barrels.

The way this whiskey came about started in the summer of 2018 when six barrels that held Chicken Cock's 10-Year-Old Double Barrel Bourbon were given to Goodwood Brewing in Louisville to finish in their Walnut Brown Ale barrels....
'Once finished, Goodwood Brewing returned those six barrels to Chicken Cock. Chicken Cock Master Distiller Gregg Snyder, working alongside O.Z. Tyler's Master Distiller Jacob Call, then filled them with a blend of 100% Kentucky Bourbon aged 1.5-11.5 years. The Bourbon was finished in the six barrels for six months before final blending and bottling, yielding a mere 1,800 bottles of this all-Kentucky collaborative release.'
The new spirit comes with a MSRP of $80 for a 750ml bottle. The bottle itself contains decorative etchings and a 'sipping glass' lid and comes in 90 proof (45% alcohol) and will be available in Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

The tasting notes are butterscotch, caramel, and vanilla, followed by a hint of toasted oak, and then a sweet finish with nut and chocolate flavor.

Our Take

This is my first exposure to Chicken Cock. They were a brand that originated in 1856 in Paris, Kentucky and was revived in 2012. Today, they work with Bardstown Bourbon Company and O.Z. Tyler to help bring their products to market. I'm fairly intrigued by this release and wish it were coming to Ohio. The bottle is super cool and I appreciate finishing working with Goodwood to try to bring out new and exciting flavors and the price seems reasonable. Alas, this release isn't scheduled for Ohio, but I have my fingers crossed that that we'll see future releases in Ohio.
