Buffalo Trace Announces Next Edition of Old Charter Oak Series with Canadian Oak

Buffalo Trace has announced the next edition of their Old Charter Oak Series with the addition of Canadian Oak. The Old Charter Oak Series  is Buffalo Trace's attempt to try barrels produced with various types and species of oak, with the intent to bring out unique flavors and taste profiles. This new version follows the June announcement of French Oak, and Mongolian Oak in December of 2018.
Canadian Oak has been aged for 10 years in Canadian Oak barrels. The difference is supposed be that the Canadian environment (cold winters, mild summers) leads to a tighter-grained wood that 'releases more of its signature oak aromatics while allowing the spirit to be aged longer in the barrel.'

Canadian Oak will be available starting this month (October, 2019) and will be the last Charter Oak Series released this year. It comes in at 92 proof (46% alcohol) and has a suggested retail price of $69.99.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Caramel, Berries
Taste: Vanilla, Maple Syrup
Finish: Long finish, Oak, Chocolate, Pepper

My Take

As I've written previously, I love when companies try different variations of bourbon using different mashbills, char, or in this case, wood. For $69.99, this is a heck of a deal for a 10 year expression and if I see this, I'm buying a bottle with no questions asked.... which brings us to the problem with the Old Charter Oak Series.... They just aren't available in Ohio and are extremely limited elsewhere. If you see these in the wild, buy it, but unfortunately, the odds are that you won't.
