Campbell Brown, Old Forester President says about this year's edition:
Founded by my great-great grandfather, Old Forester the only bourbon brand with an uninterrupted 150-year history, sold by the same family company before, during and after Prohibition. Birthday Bourbon is the perfect way to celebrate his birthday and this milestone year makes it even more special. Its annual release has become something that bourbon lovers anticipate, and we really believe that the 2020 version is one of our best yet.
Last year's version was the highest proofed ever coming in at 105 (52.5% alcohol). The 2020 version comes in at 98 proof (49% alcohol) and is made up of 95 barrels, aged 10 years so supply is extremely limited. Bottles have an MSRP of $129.99. No tasting notes for this year's release are:
Nose: A nuanced balance of white floral notes, magnolia and citrus, spiced with vanilla, buttery leather and cocoa powder. Countering the spice are sprinkles of brown sugar, white chocolate shavings, caramel drizzle and hints of tropical fruit.Taste: Caramel and brittle toffee lead as the tropical character blooms into banana, mango, coconut flakes and macadamia nut.Finish: Long and delicately drying with a hint of anise.
My Take
Last year, there was a very limited amount of the Birthday Bourbon that found its way to Ohio. So few that the Ohio Liquor Commission (OHLQ) had a raffle at four locations throughout the state a few months after the release date (the 2019 was released on Sept. 2 and the raffle was held on Nov. 14th). I would expect something similar this year. I don't think it will be a raffle because we're still fighting the pandemic, but perhaps some sort of lottery.
Regarding if this is something you should go on the hunt for... it definitely is. This is an incredibly hard to find bottle and looks amazing on the shelf. As always, stay tuned to Columbusbourbon.com for any news on when and where these will be available in Ohio.
