Maker's Mark has announced their 2020 version of their annual wood finishing series. This is the second year in this annual release. This year's limited release version is result of two stave profiles (SE4xPR5) blended together to create this unique release.
For this release, Maker's Mark began with a barrel of fully matured Maker’s Mark at cask strength and then inserted 10 seared virgin French oak staves into the barrel and finished the bourbon for nine additional weeks in their limestone cellar.
The 2020 Wood Finishing Series is bottled at cask strength (110.8 proof, 55.4% alcohol). The bottles will be available nationwide, but supplies are limited. No MSRP was provided, however, their is a Maker's Mark Wood Finishing Series listed on the State of Ohio website with a sale price of $59.99... not sure if this is for the 2019 or 2020 edition.
The tasting notes are:
Nose: Heavy vanilla with spiced caramel
Taste: Butter pecan ice cream. Vanilla with creamy butter notes, dry spice and caramelized sweetness
Finish: Long, round and dry
My Take
I tried figuring out what the stave profiles indicated (SE4xPR5), but came up empty so that doesn't do anything in terms of making this more enticing. What is interesting about this is the cask strength and the rarity. If this comes in under $60, this could be worth checking out. If the price is more than that, I'm going to pass since there are plenty of other variations of Maker's that I'm yet to try and review.
What do you think? Let me know in the comments.
