Latitude Beverage Co. owned brand Wheel Horse has announced a new flagship bourbon that will be hitting stores in select states later this year (sadly, Ohio is not one of them). This bourbon is a collaboration with Owensboro Distilling Company (formerly O.Z. Tyler) and follows the release of the Wheel Horse Rye that was announced in January.
Jacob Call, Master Distiller at Owensboro Distilling states:It has been an honor to carry on the 135-year tradition of this historic distillery, which was recently renamed so we could better honor its storied past. We reopened for production in 2016 after being closed for more than seven decades, and Wheel Horse was one of the first national brands to show off our whiskey. We're excited to partner with Latitude Beverage again on the release of Wheel Horse Bourbon. You're going to love it.
The flagship bourbon has a mashbill of 70% corn, 21% rye, and 9% malted barley. It is produced through the sour mash method (you can read about the sour mash method here), distilled in copper stills, then barreled in 53 gallon charred American oak barrels. The bourbon is aged between 2 and 4 years and is bottled at 101 proof (50.5 alcohol). It has an MSRP of $27.99. No tasting notes were provided.
My Take
It's always nice to see new bourbon's on the shelves, especially at reasonable prices. It's a shame this won't be available in Ohio due to our anti-consumer liquor laws. If you see this in other states, pick it up and give it a try and leave a comment below with your thoughts. The hope is that they'll be able to get through the Ohio Division of Liquor Control and JobsOhio Beverage System (JOBS) and be able to start selling in Ohio.
What do you think? Let me know in the comments.
