Maker's Mark has announced that Maker’s Mark Private Selection is making its return to Ohio with four (or six) all-new expressions available at select retailers starting December 7th.
The expressions are:- Grandpa’s Toddy - Subtle notes of dark chocolate and dried fruits
- Winter Wassel - Honey, lemon zest and hints of baking spices
- Chocolate Marmalade - Warm notes of rich cocoa and molasses
- Bread Pudding - Vanilla and maple, finishing with whispers of nutmeg and caramel
There is some confusion around the number of varieties available as some of the marketing materials that showed up had six listed (Pecan Pie and Pecan Pie A La Mode). No proofs were provided, however and they sell for $69.99 + tax per bottle.
My Take
I actually saw these in the store on Monday and I passed without as much as a glance. There was a decent sized group of men standing by the display like they had just scored a PS5 so maybe I'm out of touch with this one. For me, I'm not a huge Maker's Mark fan... it's fine, but it's not my favorite so the new expressions didn't move the needle. Couple that with the $70 price and the choice between a 750ml bottle of Maker's Mark Private Selection or a 1.75 handle of Woodford for the same price... I picked the Woodford.
If you're a huge Maker's Mark fan or looking for a unique give for someone in the $50-100 price range, this could be a good pick up. As of this writing on the 10th, the State is showing plenty of inventory, but I anticipate these will be gone by the end of the weekend so act fast.
