Buffalo Trace Distillery has announced their 3rd release of their ultra ultra premium 20-Year Double Eagle Very Rare bourbon with a whopping MSRP of $2000 per bottle. New this year is the proof has been increased from 90 to 101 as a nod to the original proof of Eagle Rare Bourbon when it was first released in 1975.
For the 2021 release, only 199 bottles were produced and each bottle includes an individually numbered letter of authenticity. Additionally, each bottle comes in a crystal decanter and arrives in a silver presentation box consisting of two sliding doors, imprinted with a design similar to eagle feathers. The doors open to the hand-blown crystal decanter, which features two sculptured crystal glass eagles, one inside of the bottle and one serving as the stopper.
The tasting notes are:
Nose: Dark cherries and creamy caramel
Taste: Dark chocolate, smoked oak and dates
Finish: A long, complex finish of cinnamon, anise and oak.
My Take
As I say with all of these super expensive releases... $2000 is an insane amount to spend on a single bottle of bourbon for the average person (or even someone who is moderately rich). If you're hoping to buy a bottle of this in Ohio, your only option will be the expensive bottle lottery. Last year, Ohio was allocated 6 bottles and had 18,653 entries so your odds are around 1 in 3000... or, to put it another way... you're not going to purchase this bottle retail.
For me, this is a hard pass. I don't enter the lottery because there is so many better things I can do for $2000 than buy a single bottle of bourbon. Additionally, to pay that much and not have it barrel proof is a bit ridiculous.
