Heaven Hill has announced the Spring 2022 release of the Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. This batch is a 17-year version, meaning it was put in the barrel way back in the Autumn of 2004!
This is the oldest Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond release, topping the 16-years released in 2020. This is the 9th release of the Bottled-in-Bond series. As you may know, all Bottled-in-Bond is bottled at 100 proof (50% alcohol) and must be aged a minimum of four years. No price or availability was provided, however, it is listed as $199.98 on the State website. This release offers the following tasting notes:Nose: Aged oak with vanilla, walnuts, dried citrus, and baking spices.Taste: Smooth and rich with caramel and butterscotch. Dark chocolate and abundant spices, especially at the back of the tongue. Bright spearmint note at mid-palate.Finish: Warm and soft. Nutmeg and cloves.
My Take
Without knowing the price, it's hard to make a determination if this is a must-buy. However, it's not everyday you see a 17-year bourbon because so much of the product evaporates over time. I did an analysis back in 2019 of how much product is left after each year.. and after 17 years, almost half of the product would have been lost. For that reason alone, this is worth purchasing if you find it without too much of a markup. If this makes it to Ohio, expect to see it in a future OHLQ lottery.
