Hemingway Whiskey Company today announced the launch of Hemingway Rye Whiskey First Edition with the release of the inaugural 972 bottles. This initial offering is a blend of straight rye whiskeys finished in rum seasoned Oloroso Sherry casks. This brand is inspired by American author, journalist, and storyteller Ernest Hemingway.
Jacob Call, who help craft this release says:As an eighth-generation distiller and Kentuckian, I've had the chance to work with a variety of whiskey brands throughout my distilling career but having the chance to work with my father and brother on our Hemingway Rye Whiskey has been a dream come true. Together, we have poured our hearts into this first edition blend, and we're proud to share it.
Hemingway Rye Whiskey was founded by a team led by Steve Groth, whiskey pioneer and co-founder of the Angel's Envy Bourbon brand. The Call family, Seventh-Generation Master Distiller Ron Call and his sons, Clayton Call and Eighth-Generation Master Distiller Jacob Call hand sourced, blended, and finished the rye
This release is a blend of 96% 9-year-old Indiana Straight Rye and 4% 4-year-old Kentucky Straight Rye which are then finished in rum-seasoned Oloroso Sherry casks. The bottles are hand-numbered and hand-signed by the Calls; each will come encased in a textured library-style box, which includes a gold foiled Hemingway signature, "First Edition" inscription, and a satin pull ribbon. Each First Edition bottle also features a unique, removable card on the back, inspired by old-fashioned library book cards.Nose: Rich caramel and brown sugar complemented by back notes of soft rye and vanilla.Taste: Notes of rich cherry, toasted oak, creamy caramel, and cinnamonFinish: A soft, sweet, and warm finish
My Take
I'll start out by saying right away that Hemingway is my favorite writer of all time. A Farewell to Arms is my go-to book whenever I can't decide on what to read followed by The Sun Also Rises. With that, it's fun to have a new whiskey brand named after him. In terms of the whiskey, it sounds a lot like Angel's Envy, which is also finished in port wine barrels. This makes sense since Hemingway Whiskey is created by one of the Angel's Envy founders. This is worth checking out if you have the means. It would be pretty cool to get a first edition if this brand ends up taking off.
